The Submariner was the first diving watch equipped with a rotatable bezel. The graduations provide the diver with an accurate indication of diving time. The bezel of a watch can deteriorate when exposed to sunlight, chlorinated water or scratches. This motivated Rolex to create a one-of-a-kind bezel with a Cerachrom disc. Fashioned from extremely hard ceramic material, it has excellent corrosion-resistant properties, its color remains unaffected by ultraviolet rays and it is virtually scratchproof. To inscribe numerals on this hardest of materials, Rolex further developed and patented a unique process. The numerals and graduations are carved before the ceramic hardens; the Cerachrom disc is then covered with either yellow gold or platinum, atom by atom, and polished until only the precious metal in the numerals and graduations remains, permanently.
