The Santos de Cartier is one of the most historically significant wristwatch designs ever created. Its origins date to 1904, when Louis Cartier created a wristwatch for his friend, pioneering Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who wanted to read the time while flying without having to reach for a pocket watch. The resulting design would become one of the earliest purpose-built mens wristwatches and established an aesthetic that remains unmistakably Cartier more than a century later.
This modern Large interpretation preserves that historic identity while giving the Santos a considerably stronger contemporary presence. The square case with softly rounded corners flows directly into the integrated bracelet, while the exposed screws across the bezel and bracelet turn functional construction into an essential part of the design. Alternating brushed surfaces and highly polished accents emphasize the architecture of the case and bracelet, giving the watch an almost jewelry-like quality as it moves on the wrist.
The centerpiece is unquestionably the graduated blue dial. Its rich blue coloration changes dramatically with the light, transitioning from brighter blue through the center toward considerably darker tones at the perimeter. Oversized Roman numerals surround Cartiers signature railway minute track, while luminous sword-shaped hands introduce the sporting character expected of the modern Santos. A discreet date aperture at 6 oclock maintains the symmetry of the dial, and the faceted blue spinel set into the seven-sided crown provides the unmistakable finishing touch of Cartier.
Powering the watch is Cartiers manufacture Caliber 1847 MC, a self-winding mechanical movement developed for the Maisons modern generation of mechanical watches. The caliber combines everyday reliability with traditional mechanical watchmaking and provides approximately 42 hours of power reserve, making the Santos considerably more than simply an exercise in design.
Few watches can claim a design lineage stretching back more than a century while remaining instantly recognizable in contemporary form. The Santos is not a modern watch inspired by Cartiers history. It is part of that history. The spectacular graduated blue dial adds an especially rich and modern personality to one of the Maisons great icons, while the integrated bracelet, exposed screws and unmistakable square architecture remain faithful to the design language that made the Santos legendary. It is a watch that brings together aviation history, jewelry-level design and genuine mechanical watchmaking in a form that could only be Cartier. REF# WSSA0030
